Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Framingham Owner’s Guide

Gelco flue liner replacement in Framingham typically runs $2,800-$5,200 installed, depending on liner diameter, height, and whether the chimney needs crown or smoke-chamber work at the same time. We stock Gelco-compatible stainless steel liners and connectors for standard residential sizes, and most replacements are completed in a single day once the written scope is approved. If you’re seeing rust flakes in your firebox or catching a metallic smell when the flue heats up, the liner wall has likely cracked or the seam weld has failed.

Most Framingham homeowners find this problem during a routine sweep or after a home inspection flags “damaged flue liner” on the report. The Gelco name usually appears on a metal tag near the thimble or cleanout door, or stamped into the collar at the top of the chimney. Corrine Halstead, our owner, has replaced Gelco liners across older colonials near Cushing Memorial Park where freeze-thaw cycles and acidic condensate from gas appliances eat the seam welds faster than the manufacturer spec suggests.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco produced several liner series over the years, and the part you need depends on fuel type, liner diameter, and connection style. The most common in Framingham homes are the Gelco UL-1777 stainless steel smooth-wall liners in 5.5-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch diameters, plus the older corrugated flex liners that predate current UL listings. Check the metal tag on your existing liner collar for a model prefix (GL-, GS-, or GF-) and a diameter stamp. If the tag is missing, measure the inner diameter at the thimble opening and note whether your appliance is wood, gas, or oil-fired.

We source replacement liners through Haven’s buying network from Gelco, Olympia Chimney, and DuraFlex. For most Framingham replacements, we install a new Olympia or DuraFlex stainless liner that meets or exceeds Gelco’s original spec, with a lifetime warranty on the material. OEM Gelco liners are available by special order if your insurance or historic commission requires matching manufacturer, but the aftermarket equivalents perform identically and ship faster. The one compatibility gotcha: early Gelco flex liners used a proprietary twist-lock collar that doesn’t mate with current UL-1777 adapters. We carry transition fittings for this on our trucks.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
  • Rust particles or scale in the firebox. Stainless steel liners don’t rust through in normal service. When you see orange flakes, the liner wall has cracked or a seam has opened, letting condensate reach the outer surface where it oxidizes. This is common in Framingham’s older two-story colonials where the liner runs 25+ feet and thermal expansion stresses the midsection weld.
  • Metallic or acrid smell when the appliance runs. Combustion gases are escaping through a liner breach and reacting with moisture in the masonry. The smell is your warning before carbon monoxide becomes a measurable problem.
  • White efflorescence or spalling on exterior brick. A cracked liner dumps acidic moisture into the chimney cavity. In Framingham’s freeze-thaw climate, that moisture migrates outward and pops the brick face off by spring. We’ve documented this pattern repeatedly in homes south of Route 9.
  • Smoke backup or poor draft on windy days. A liner that’s separated at a joint creates turbulence instead of smooth draft. The problem worsens when northwest winds hit the chimney cap, which is why Framingham owners often notice it first in January.
  • Home inspector flags “damaged flue liner” with no further detail. The inspector saw something through the thimble or caught a reading on a combustible gas detector. You need a camera drop to know whether it’s a localized crack or full replacement. We include this scan with every estimate.

Scope Typical Range in Framingham
Gelco-compatible stainless liner, 6″ × 20-25 ft, with insulation $2,800-$3,800
Gelco-compatible stainless liner, 8″ × 25-35 ft, with insulation $3,800-$5,200

The price spread comes down to three things: liner diameter and length, whether we can pull the old liner without dismantling the smoke chamber, and what the crown condition looks like once we’re on the roof. We deliver a written price before any work starts, with the scope itemized and the warranty stated. The liner carries a lifetime material warranty; our labor is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Materials are sourced through Haven’s buying network to keep customer prices honest.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no safe DIY path for flue liner replacement. The work involves working at height on a pitched roof, handling sharp stainless sections in a confined flue, and verifying combustion safety with a draft gauge and gas analyzer afterward. A liner that isn’t fully supported and insulated can overheat adjacent framing, and a improper connection at the appliance collar vents carbon monoxide into the living space.

What you can do yourself: check the metal tag for model and diameter, photograph any rust or debris in the firebox, and note whether the problem is constant or weather-dependent. That information gets our technician to the right parts on the truck. The camera doesn’t lie, and neither does the written estimate. Call (508) 850-0489 and we’ll schedule a Level 2 inspection with camera documentation. We also offer a Free Second Opinion on any competitor’s written estimate.
