Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

• Rust streaks running down the chimney face. Galvanized GC caps lose their zinc coating at the weld seams first. Once water hits bare steel in Framingham’s freeze-thaw cycles, the cap rusts from the inside out. We see this most on north-facing exposures in neighborhoods near Cushing Memorial Park.

• The WD cap has stopped rotating. The wind-directional design uses a sealed bearing that eventually gums up with creosote and moisture. Once it seizes, draft performance drops and smoke can spill into the room on marginal-burn days.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things from the ground: whether the cap is centered, whether mesh sides are intact, and whether rust streaks are new or old. Use binoculars. Don’t climb the roof to tug on it.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. Crown-mounted caps require proper sealing with high-temp silicone or refractory caulk; amateur jobs often leak within a season. Band-clamp caps on metal flue pipes need precise tension - too loose and they blow off in a nor’easter, too tight and they deform the flue. The WD series bearing assembly must be pre-lubricated and aligned to wind direction; we’ve found seized bearings on DIY installs where the set screw was never tightened. And any roof work above single-story height is a fall hazard, period.
